Oscillating between the realms of hopeful expectation and stark reality, Mahalaxmi Karn’s debut solo exhibition is an autobiographical expression of her life in Ranti, Bihar.

Her work emerges as a feminist voice within Mithila art, a form traditionally set within a woman’s domain. Her intensely observed narratives are based on her own immediate experiences of marriage and motherhood, in contrast to the social mores around her.

Mahalaxmi considers artist, Santosh Kumar Das, as her most significant mentor. She draws profound inspiration from Das’ “language of line”, and continues to refine and redefine the traditional style.

About the artist

Mahalaxmi Karn (b. 1988, Ranti village, Madhubani district, Bihar) grew up surrounded by Mithila art. As a contemporary artist she regards Santosh Kumar Das (internationally acclaimed artist, teacher and former Director, Mithila Art Institute), as her mentor, earning her the title, "Protege Artist in Madhubani Art” at the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2016.

She continues to collaborate with Santosh Kumar Das, together with her husband, artist Shantanu Das. Amongst their collaborations is the book ‘Black’ (Tara Books, 2017) and several projects to this day.

Mahalaxmi has exhibited her work across India, USA and Europe, sharing her unique expression of Mithila art with a global audience.
