For Homo Mobilis, photographer Martin Roemers travelled the world with a large white backdrop, a camera, and a simple question: “Would you pose with your vehicle for me?”
“Show me your vehicle and I’ll tell you who you are.”
The resulting images offer an eye-opening exploration of how vehicles shape personal identity and society and ultimately, the environment. Focusing on the mass motorisation of the 20th century, Roemers reveals the relationship between people and their vehicles, beyond consumerism, where transport becomes a marker of identity and social structure.
Each portrait presents a driver and their vehicle against a blank background, forming a typology that invites reflection. These vehicles are more than transport; they signal status, culture, and self.
Homo Mobilis ultimately suggests that how we move is inseparable from who we are.
Martin Roemers has worked on exhibitions and photo books, including Kabul, Relics of the Cold War, The Eyes of War and Metropolis.
His work has been exhibited in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia and is included in the collections of institutes like the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), and the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles). Roemers has won two World Press Photo Awards, alongside a variety of other prizes.
