This upcycled sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, began as a donation to the Sari Bank. "This mauve satin sari was donated by Rashna Cooper. It was the first time I received a plain sari and it set me thinking. It required a different treatment from my usual somewhat ethnic look. Finally I found a silver 'Gota' border which matched the mood of the sari, and as an extension, I picked upa silver-sequinned lavender fabric for the pallav. I am quite pleased with the result, and I would love to meet the person who buys it!," says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris began when my sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
