This upcycled sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, began as a donation to the Sari Bank. "This Ikat silk sari was a donation. I personally don't like brown, so I kept avoiding upcycling it. But I have a responsibility towards the donors, so I reluctantly set to work. Initially I tried to brighten the saree by adding a contrasting yellow or orange. But that didn't work. Finally I chose a dull olive green, to complement the brown, and added a narrow hand made border and a Banarasi brocade, both in the same shade. I think this sari is one of the best I have made so far. I hope you think so too!" says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris began when my sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
