Painting is an act of worship for Chitara families of the wandering Vaghari community who have evolved a form of art, devoted to the Goddess Mother or Mata. ‘Mata-ni-Pachedi’ in Gujarati translates to ‘that which enshrines the Goddess Mother’. Her many manifestations are hand-painted or block-printed on cloth, in a prescribed format, where a powerful central image is surrounded by mythological stories.
In this series, the artist draws on paper without any premeditated sketching, in the traditional palette of red and black.
