Beadwork Jewellery of the Mirs

Pair of Beaded Bangles: Red, Gold and Blue

Rs. 1,200.00

This pair of beaded bangles, in red, gold and blue, uses glass beads to create an intricate mesh over printed fabric, wrapped around a sturdy recycled plastic base. They are made by women of the nomadic Mir tribe who subsist on the fringes of the Little Rann of Kutch desert in western India.

Co-designed with Carole Douglas, an Australian artist, writer, and traveler, the bangles build on traditional skills and aesthetics. Using just a needle and thread, the women are adept in crafting beadwork jewellery. Today, each bangle represents economic freedom for more than thirty marginalized women of the Mir tribe.

With industrialization encroaching upon traditional lifestyles, the communities are at risk of losing their cultural identity. The Mir Beaded Bangle collection creates a sustainable source of creative livelihoods, while keeping the traditional art of beadwork alive.
