Today it is led by her daughter, Padmini Govind, who carries forward its legacy with an commitment to sustainability. In 2025 Tharangini won the prestigious Creative Australia Innovation Award for Asia Pacific.

About Dhi Earth

Dhi Earth, led by designer Indira Varma, creates clothing shaped by an ethos rooted in low-ecological-impact production, and co-creation with artisan communities, reimagining heritage textiles for a contemporary audience while keeping local traditions alive.

The Process

The fabrics are produced through a 14-step natural resin discharge print technique - a nearly forgotten, slow process, that resists industrial waste. This plant-based paste is fermented, applied to cloth with hand-carved wood blocks, then wrapped, steamed, washed, and cured in sunlight to reveal its design. The result is a striking visual language: organic, understated yet undeniably artful.

This journey has been inherently collaborative, one where skilled wood-carvers, block printers, colour-makers and design facilitators became co-creators. As a result of dialogue, exchange and trust, each piece carries the unique heart and hand of its makers.

An outcome of nature-first decisions, these textiles enable climate conscious conversations, foster connections across geographies and hierarchies, and promote a conscious way of making and being. Tharangini and Dhi Earth invite you to see these textiles not only as works of beauty, but as a vision for a more responsible future.
