Madhubani Painting
BIHAR
Mahalaxmi, born in 1988, is a talented painter hailing from Ranti village in Madhubani district of Bihar. What started as a childhood hobby has now become both a source of income and a means of creative expression for her. Over the years, she has learned this art form from various teachers, but it was her encounter with Santosh Kumar Das in 2011 that truly shaped her artistic journey. Under his guidance for three years, she delved deep into Madhubani art, mastering its alphabets, compositions, and intricate line styles, discovering a new realm within this art form.
In 2013, Mahalaxmi received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, India for her exceptional work in retelling the Ramayana through the Madhubani style. She has also collaborated with French photographer Vasantha Yoganathan in the creation of a photo book based on the Ramayana. Additionally, Mahalaxmi actively engages in mural creation, as it is deeply rooted in the history of Madhubani art. Her husband, Shantanu Das, is her constant collaborator in all her artistic endeavors.
Mahalaxmi's talent and dedication have been recognized through various accolades. In January 2016, she was jointly awarded the title of "Protege Artist in Madhubani Art" by Ojas Art at the Jaipur Literature Festival. She has also participated in the Indo-Bhutan Cultural Exchange Program in June 2017, showcasing her artworks in galleries across India, America, and France. Her works were exhibited in a group show titled "Ascending Roots" at Ojas Art Gallery in Delhi in September 2018 and at the ArtRage Gallery in Syracuse in April 2019. Furthermore, Mahalaxmi had the opportunity to showcase her Mithila art at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, USA, in 2019.
