This shawl is hand woven in Bhujodi, the first village to be conferred a Geographical Indicator (GI) in India.
This innovative design is not just woven, but designed by a master weaver for a traditional 4-shaft pit loom. It has unbleached cotton on the warp, and ikat tussar silk on the weft, with extra-weft designs picked on the borders. The colours are natural dyed iron-grey.
Meghwal Weavers of Kutch in western India, have woven traditional shawls for nomadic Rabari shephards, for 800 years. This symbiotic relationship continues today.
Today a new cadre of Artisan-Designer-Entrepreneur is emerging, from a revolutionary movement which empowers makers through design education. While they preserve the Bhujodi identity, and its distinct design vocabulary, they innovate with new materials, colours, and techniques. This natural-dye ikat scarf represents a high point in Artisan-Design.
The entire family is involved with the process. This shawl is finished with a bound warp fringe of short tassels, crafted by the young women in the family.
