This upcycled sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was donated to the Sari Bank. "It was a simple handloom South Indian cotton sari with a green zari border. I added a red border from a Maharashtrian Ilkal sari which was also a donation, and a green cotton block-printed pallav,'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris began when my sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
