'Our City: Regenerating Hope', is a paean to the city that the Vayeda brothers know well. They experienced the contrast between the way of life in the village and the city everyday on their daily commutes to college. Mumbai is represented in detail by her iconic buildings, from historic to contemporary architecture. Their hope is for a sustainable city, harnessing renewable energy, investing in green spaces, and nurturing life within an ecologically sound environment. It is a reminder of the original inhabitants, of the land on which Mumbai is built.
ARTISANS’ presents the first ever exhibition in Mumbai of the brothers Mayur (29) and Tushar (38) Vayeda, internationally celebrated artists from the indigenous Warli community in western India.
In Regeneration the Vayedas seek to reconnect with their ancestors; to reclaim and reconstruct their ancient legacy for a new generation; and to transform their collective lives. This call for regeneration is inspired by natural and indigenous systems that heal and restore damaged ecosystems.
In this series, the Vayeda brothers adapt their inherited style of painting to communicate. While they strive to preserve the basic grammar of its style and remain deeply connected to its origins, their concepts go far beyond, to address universal concerns. In the process they move their tradition forward, towards the vanguard of contemporary Warli art.
