Madhubani Painting
BIHAR
Madhubani artist, Moti Satyanarayan Karn won a prestigious national award in 2001, together with her husband Satyanarayan, for their unique contribution to the art. A fourth-generation artist, Satyanarayan was born in the Madhubani district of Bihar, where he learnt the art from his mother, Jagdamba Devi. She was the very first artist to win the highest national award, a Padmashree, for Madhubani painting. Moti’s lineage is distinguished as well, and today, with the passing of Satyanarayan, she continues the legacy with her daughter-in-law, Jyoti Karn.
Their unique painting style is easy to identify. It is defined by black outlines created using charcoal with a bamboo stick, filled with natural pigments derived from dried flowers, leaves and vegetables that grow in the region.
