See all Karomi's Work
Sarita Ganeriwala studied art at MS University, Baroda, before completing a post-graduation in Textiles at NIFT, Delhi. Drawing inspiration from her explorations in print-making, her brand KAROMI emerged as a contemporary interpretation of Bengal’s Jamdani weave, in 2007, breaking free of predictable grids, repetitive patterns and traditional templates.
In ‘Unstructured Whole’, Sarita takes her exploration further - layering block printing, weaving, and the inimitable ‘nakshi kantha’, traditional textile techniques of Bengal - to create works of art. Textures predominate, to create an illusion of depth and dimension.
Working for the first time on a large scale, the significance of Karomi’s artwork is in the disruption of Bengal kantha quilt’s original context and function. Each represents a dialogue between past and present, challenging viewers to reexamine collective narratives layer by layer.
