Welcome a little one to the world with this lovingly-made baby quilt! It is created by women in Karnataka using the uniquely improvisional technique of Kavandi (or Khowdi). Each quilt holds an abundace of memories, stitched together from scraps of clothes and old saris, to keep the family warm. The closely spaced running stitch, uses coarser cotton thread to define a grid that is often brought to life with appliqued motifs observed from everyday life.
This artisan nitiative is led by Geeta Patil of Tavaru, to create optimally sewn and crafted textiles for the home, working with the handloom and handicraft artisans of north Karnataka. It aims to revive and sustain traditional textile practices, with the vision of creating a self-sufficient production system, created and managed end-to-end solely by women, with the larger goal of reinstating their agency.
In these authentic quilted and hand-embroidered textiles, each becomes a canvas of expression - where women artisans have the freedom to explore color, texture, and stitch!
