Mahalaxmi Karn's painting are autobiographical reflections on her experiences as a young bride and mother, within a village in Bihar. Oscillating between her wishful imaginary expectations and the ground reality, her work expresses contemporary narratives from her daily life, in the vocabulary of Madhubani art.
About the artist
Mahalaxmi is a Mithila artist from Ranti, Bihar. Growing up in the district of Madhubani, the centre of Mithila painting, she experienced art as part of everyday life from a young age. Throughout her artistic journey, Mahalaxmi has had the contemporary master, Santosh Kumar Das, as her mentor. She and her husband, Shantanu Das, worked on the book, Black (Tara Books, 2017), by Santosh Kumar Das, and the three continue to collaborate on projects.
She has exhibited her work across India, America, and Europe, sharing her unique take on Mithila art with a global audience. She had her first solo exhibition at ARTISANS' Mumbai in 2023.
