See all The Vayeda Brothers' Work
The diptych, 'Journey I and II' represents the journey of indigenous people from their land. From dwelling in the jungle, to their journey out of it; from the dispossession of fertile land, to migration away from it. They move towards the edge of urban development, becoming part of it through their participation in construction on their land. A river runs through both the painting and unifies them.
ARTISANS’ presents the first ever exhibition in Mumbai of the brothers Mayur (29) and Tushar (38) Vayeda, internationally celebrated artists from the indigenous Warli community in western India.
In Regeneration the Vayedas seek to reconnect with their ancestors; to reclaim and reconstruct their ancient legacy for a new generation; and to transform their collective lives. This call for regeneration is inspired by natural and indigenous systems that heal and restore damaged ecosystems.
In this series, the Vayeda brothers adapt their inherited style of painting to communicate. While they strive to preserve the basic grammar of its style and remain deeply connected to its origins, their concepts go far beyond, to address universal concerns. In the process they move their tradition forward, towards the vanguard of contemporary Warli art.
