Archana Shah first visited Kutch in 1976 and has worked with the artisans there for over 3o years. After graduating from the National Institute of Design in 1980, she founded the highly successful clothing store, Bandhej, in Ahmedabad.
She has become one of the
leading designers of women's clothing in India and has created a label which draws deeply on India's rich textile heritage, matched with a contemporary sensibility. She continues to foster and support the talents of the weavers and dyers in Kutch and several other parts of India.
Through her many initiatives and interactions, she has been able to revive various dying craft skills, encouraging young artisans to realize that they can earn a decent livelihood by pursuing their traditional vocation. The ethos of Kutch has had a great influence on her. Over the years, she has developed a very special relationship with this magical land and its people.
Archana lives with her family in Ahmedabad.
