Bhujodi Meghwal Artisan-Designer

Bhujodi Cotton Stole: Red and Black

Rs. 1,990.00

This is handwoven in Bhujodi, the first village to be conferred a Geographical Indicator (GI) in India.

This innovative design is not just woven, but designed by a master weaver for a traditional 4-shaft pit loom. It has cotton on the warp, with extra-weft designs picked on the borders.

Meghwal Weavers of Kutch in western India, have woven traditional shawls for nomadic Rabari shephards, for 800 years. This symbiotic relationship continues today.

In the 1970s new markets opened through design-led interventions, and Bhujodi shawls, originally made from local hand spun sheep wool, are now woven in fine cotton.

Today's Artisan-Designer-Entrepreneurs preserve the Bhujodi identity, and its distinct design vocabulary, while innovating with new materials, colors, and techniques.

The entire family is involved with the process. This shawl is finished with a warp fringe of short tassels, crafted by the young women in the family.
