The upcycled vintage black and green muslin sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, salvages a family heirloom from his mother.
''The sari body had frayed badly, so I replaced it with black cotton mulmul. But I realised the border needed something more to make it work, and added borders from two other sarees. Finally I added silver badla (metal embroidered spangles), to lift the black body. So this sari upcyles four sarees!'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
