This upcycled cream silk sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was part of his sister Yashodhara's distinguished sari collection.
"I wondered how I could use a remnant of pale moss-green silk I found in Yashodhara's cupboard. A textured cream cotton fabric in my stash, went perfectly with it. To complete the saree I added a cream and gold Banarasi brocade for the pallav and a narrow gold border. all around I all came together beautifully!" says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank welcomes contributions. So each sari triples the joy: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
