This upcycled Kantha silk sari, design by Joy Bimal Roy, salvages a shawl from his own wardrobe. ''I no longer wear this because it looks too flamboyant for me now. Why not turn this into a sari? I combined a complementary dupion silk fabric and added a border to unify the sari. This was an experiment,'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
