This upcycled pink and green Kanjivaram sari designed by Joy Bimal Roy, combines two Kanjivarams, donated by Tejaswini Sontakke to the Sari Bank. Both are her grandmother's saris. ''I swapped the border and pallav of one to the other saree. My tailor Abbas is skilled at combining saris seamlessly. Tejaswini is delighted - the ultimate affirmation for me!'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
