This upcycled Kanjivaram sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was part of his sister Yashodhara's distinguished sari collection. "The border and pallav were intact but the body had frayed. So when I set my eyes on the fabric for the new body, I fell in love with it. It is a tasteful natural white and dull gold, and lends the sari an old world charm," says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
