This upcycled ikat cotton sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was part of his sister Yashodhara's distinguished sari collection. The ikat borders are given a new lease of life, on a carefully chosen soft cotton fabric. "I placed the three borders exactly as they were on the original saree. It looks very dramatic when worn. It was a successful experiment," says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
