This upcycled black ikat cotton sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was part of his sister Yashodhara's distinguished sari collection.
"Yashodhara's vintage Odishi ikat sari was in bad shape but the border and pallav were usable. So I placed them on a fine black cotton mulmul. It simple but striking," says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
ARTISANS' Sari Bank welcomes contributions. So each sari triples the joy: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
Dry clean only.
