This upcycled pink floral cotton sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, was donated by Srobona Das to the Sari Bank. It combines two different saris.
''This ultra-feminine sari is an experiment. A complimentary cotton fabric of a delicate floral design combines with the plain pink body. After putting it together, I felt the pink border needed embellishment, so I added a pink lace border. The result is very pleasing.'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank welcomes contributions. So each sari triples the joy: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
