This upcycled silk sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, salvages a tussah silk dhoti-angavstram set.
"I raided my cupboard and found these traditional Bengali sets. This was the plainest of them. It is tussah with a fine red border. I just added a complementary pallav - a red Banarasi silk brocade with gold motifs. The transformation is complete!"'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
ARTISANS' Sari Bank welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
