This upcycled sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, began as a remnant. "I had admired this purple Banarasi brocade with its large motifs for a long time but couldn't find the right fabric for the body. When I found this beautiful handwoven cream Chanderi, it was just the right match. I added a gold tissue border with narrow purple border and I got just the look I wanted - elegant and understated despite thelarge motifs," says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris began when my sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
