This ochre and black clamp-resist dyed stole, uses the Japanese Shibori technique of Itajime to create infinite patterns, folded textures, and “permanent memories on cloth”.
Yoshiko Wada, the renowned textile artist and author, brought Japanese shibori techniques to India at the International Shibori Symposium in 1996, at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
Since then young bandhani artisans from Kutch in Gujarat, Western India, have added Shibori techniques to their work and made it their own.
The clamp-resist technique involves folding the fabric, and using a wooden shape as a resist. This wooden resist is placed on both sides of the folded cloth and held together tightly with a clamp. A complex pattern emerges as the clamp compresses the cloth, and the dye penetrates only the areas outside.
