This contemporary wall-art is embroidered by the skilled women artisans in Bihar using sujni embroidery. Traditionally, sujni is a special quilt made in Bihar by recycling a number of worn out saris and/or dhotis together in a simple running stitch that gives it a new structure while ornamenting it. The other purpose of stitching old pieces of cloth together was to wrap the newborn; to allow it to be enveloped in a soft embrace, resembling that of its mother.
In this artwork, we have used natural-dyed leftover fabrics from our studio to create an up-cycled patchwork that becomes the base for sujni embroidery. These designs deliberately break away from the rigidity of traditional forms, to allow for a spontaneous flow of mark making to define organic patterns, lines, textures and shapes. This contemporary co-creation keeps the essence of Sujni embroidery alive, while allowing for innovation to open new markets for the traditional craft.
