Art is an act of worship for Chitara families of the wandering Vaghari community who have evolved a form of art, devoted to the Goddess Mother or Mata.
Mata-ni-Pachedi’ in Gujarati translates to ‘that which enshrines the Goddess Mother’. Prohibited from entering temples, they make temporary outdoor shrines of block printed deities on cloth. Theses are shown in a prescribed format, with a powerful central image.
Traditional madder red and iron black natural dyes are printed on hand spun hand woven cotton, and washed in the waters of the Sabarmati River of Ahmedabad.
This piece depicts Jogini Mata, who invokes the feminine energy.
