This silk stole, shows off a play of geometric compositions, on a basket weave texture, translated in tussah silk through Jamdani - the legendary weave of West Bengal. Jamdani is the unique extra-weft technique which has won it a Geographical Indicator (GI) tag.
The design is unabashedly inspired by the Bauhaus movement, and German Modernism which influenced design much beyond the 1930s, to reconcile mass production with individual artistic expression. Each limited edition stole is hand-woven by master weavers on pit looms in West Bengal. Discarding repetitive patterns, each design explores the infinite potential of artisanal weaving as a work of art. It takes off from traditional extra-weft weaving to build a contemporary repertoire.
Once driven to extinction by mechanization, Jamdani is vital to skilled livelihoods. This time-and-labor-intensive form is like embroidery-on-the-loom. Each supplementary weft motif is added individually by interlacing the yarn into the warp with fine bamboo sticks, and individual spools of thread. It offers limitless opportunities for innovation with yarns, textures and compositions.
These transformative designs have won the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Jamdani in 2012 and 2014. In 2013 Jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
