Bandhani, a traditional technique of resist dyeing in India, comes from the word bandhana, 'to tie'. The bandhani is worn for weddings in Gujarat, by both Hindu and Muslim families.
Khatri women from Kutch, Gujarat, in Western India, create the finest bandhanis. The fabric is pinched and tightly wound with thread. When dyed, the tied area resists the dye, leaving a tiny dot in its place. Dense patterns need infinite patience. When untied, the sculptural texture has an elasticity all it’s own, leaving "permanent memories on cloth."
In this collection young artisans add a new vocabulary that draws from Islamic geometry for inspiration. Elements of Japanese shibori make it particularly innovative.
