ARTISANS’ presents a new spin on the legendary hand spun hand woven Jamdani, woven in the villages of Bengal.
In this limited edition, only the finest of natural-dyed Khadi cotton is woven by masterweavers in the villages of Bengal. The whisper-soft stoles are embellished with gold Zari for the festive season.
In Jamdani, motifs are woven on traditional pit looms, into the weft, like embroidery-on-the-loom. Threads are overlaid to pattern the translucent fabric. Motifs in this collection are a tribute to modernism and the Bauhaus movement.
Bengal muslin once vied with Manchester mill-made cloth, and Jamdani, was driven to extinction by the impact of industrialization. Today it is vital to creative livelihoods. These designs are intensively handmade and difficult to replicate on a local power loom. Each design explores the infinite potential of artisanal weaving, and is a work of art.
