This rare double-sided Ajrakh 'dorukha', comes from the studio of famed master craftsman, Dr Ismail Khatri of Ajrakhpur, in western India. It is signed with an insignia, 'Ismail Khatri', printed on the bottom edge, dated 2020.
Mohar is a trdaitional geometric pattern. Both ends preserve the authentic 'chhedo' sequence of Ajrakh, one of the oldest living textiles in the world.
A collectible masterpiece, traditionally printed for the people of Sindh by the Khatri community, the pattern is printed on both sides using a complex and highly skilled resist-dyeing technique, predominantly in indigo and madder. The process takes upto sixteen steps of perfectly registered block-printing, using a set of hard carved wooden blocks, for each side.
'Ajrakh' comes from the Arabic 'Azraq' meaning blue or azure. Ajrakh patterns symbolize the universe: blue for the sky; and black for the deepest night. As they resist the dye, the white geometric motifs appear like stars in the night sky.
A luxury today, double-side printing ensured that the cloth could be worn both ways. It is the identity of the people of Sindh, whose common heritage is shared on both sides of the border.
