ARTISANS’ presents Karomi's new spin on the legendary hand spun hand woven Jamdani, woven in the villages of Bengal.
In this limited edition, natural-dyed Khadi cotton is woven by master weavers in the villages of Bengal, using varied thicknesses of yarn in an asymmetrical composition..
In Jamdani, motifs are woven on traditional pit looms, into the weft, like embroidery-on-the-loom. Threads are overlaid to pattern the translucent fabric. This design collection is a tribute to modernism and the Bauhaus movement.
Bengal muslin once vied with Manchester mill-made cloth, and Jamdani, was driven to extinction by the impact of industrialization. Today it is vital to creative livelihoods. These designs are intensively handmade and difficult to replicate on a local power loom. Each design explores the infinite potential of artisanal weaving, and is a work of art.
