This aquamarine 'khari' printed sari is designed by Joy Bimal Roy. "I found this fabric and immediately bought 5.5 metres of the unusual 'khari' print (imitation gold leaf). I had no idea what to do for a pallu. But then, rummaging through, I discovered a piece of brocade that complemented it. So, I combined two disparate elements to make this sari,'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
A Sari Bank now welcomes contributions. So each sari gives at least three times: once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
