Ajrakh, the identity of the Maldaris of Sindh, is block printed by the Khatris who migrated from Sindh to Gujarat 400 years ago. Today Sindh stands divided between two countries, where a common heritage is shared on both sides of the border.
This laborious technique involves up to 12 steps of complex printing with natural dyes and mordants. Each imprint is skillfully overlaid with fine hand carved wooden blocks.
These revivals are recreated by master artisans in the original block prints and colours - natural madder, indigo and iron-black - cherished by the people of Sindh.
