Hari Jari: Machine Appliqué Mobile Sling Bag: Multicolour

Rs. 650.00

This black Hari Jari machine appliqué mobile sling bag is designed by Pabiben Rabari, the first woman craft-entrepreneur of Gujarat, from Kutch in western India. Pabiben's is the story of a traditional artisan's ability to adapt to change. .

In 1995 the elders of the nomadic Dhebaria Rabari tribe banned young women from embroidering dowries, as the time-consuming work on their wedding trousseau led to delayed marriages. Until then, women embroidered for themselves and their families.

Undeterred, the women turned to machine appliqué using trims and ribbons from the local market, to create a new aesthetic called 'Hari-Jari'. Pabiben's first Hari-Jari bag became an instant hit, and was christened the ‘Pabi Bag’ at a local NGO, in 2002. In 2015 Pabiben, supported by her husband, started her own enterprise, which employs more than 100 women within her community.

Interestingly, Pabiben is now leading a revival of the distinctive Dhebaria Rabari hand embroidery and applique, integrating it with Hari-Jari.

Join Pabiben in keeping alive this labour of love for generations of Rabari artisans to come!
