This embroidered textile art is made with the skilled women artisans of Bihar, in central India, using their signature 'sujni' embroidery. Fabric remnants form an upcycled patchwork base for free-form 'sujni' which deliberately breaks free of traditional forms, allowing for a spontaneous flow of mark-making.
Traditionally, a 'sujni' quilt recycles old saris and dhotis held together with a simple running stitch, that transforms both the structure and surface. The softest 'sujnis' are made of old clothing, worn out with use, to wrap a newborn.
This contemporary textile art keeps the essence of 'sujni' embroidery alive, while opening new markets for traditional craftswoman.
