Dhebaria: Hand Appliqué Sling Bag: Multicolour

Rs. 1,250.00

This multicoloured hand appliquéd and embroidered Dhebaria sling bag is designed by Pabiben Rabari, the first woman craft-entrepreneur of Gujarat, from Kutch in western India. It is spacious, has a zipper closure and one handy pocket inside.

Pabiben, who champions the contemporary machine applique of Hari-Jari, has come full circle. Today she leads a revival of the distinctive Dhebaria Rabari hand embroidery and applique, which was forbidden twenty five years ago.

In 1995 the elders of the nomadic Dhebaria Rabari tribe banned young women from embroidering dowries, as the time-consuming work led to delayed marriages. Women adapted quickly. They invested in sewing machines at home, and appliquéd trims and ribbons from the local market, to create a new aesthetic for themselves, called 'Hari-Jari'.

Pabiben's is the story of a traditional artisan's ability to adapt to change, but more importantly, to embrace her collective identity. In 2015 Pabiben, supported by her husband, started her own enterprise, which employs more than 100 women within her community.

Join Pabiben in keeping alive this labour of love for generations of Rabari artisans to come!
