This upcycled red sari, designed by Joy Bimal Roy, salvages vintage sari borders. ''I had a lot of fun upcycling this sari. I discovered three vintage sari borders (2, 2.25 and 2.75 meters), coincidentally in the same colour palette.
I had no idea how I would use them, but then it occurred to me that I could use the three different borders on three sides of a sari. So that's what I did. An upcycled Touch of Joy saree!'' says Roy.
“My tryst with upcycling saris is paradoxically linked with loss. My sister, Yashodhara, left behind a legacy of coveted saris. She had impeccable taste,” says Roy. After gifting some saris, Roy began to salvage and restore others. "The challenge of integrating disparate elements into a seamless whole excites me. I choose fabric to complement each sari individually. And in that, my eternal quest for beauty and perfection have found their niche.”
ARTISANS' Sari Bank welcomes contributions. So each sari triples the 'touch of joy': once when its donated, then when its upcycled, and finally, when proceeds of sales are donated to benefit a local hospice, Shanti Avedna Sadan, Mumbai.
