See all The Vayeda Brothers' Work
The Vayeda brothers, Mayur and Tushar, are artists from the indigenous Warli community in western India, who stand at the vanguard of contemporary Warli art.
In this series, the Vayeda brothers adapt their inherited style of painting to respond to contemporary concerns about the environment. While they strive to preserve the basic grammar of the style and remain deeply connected to its origins, their concepts go far beyond, to address universal concerns. "It is here that the brothers demonstrate their artistic vision: open to the world, they are inspired by what they see, hear and experience during their travels," observes Tara Books, publisher of their book 'The Deep'.
"We find inspiration in the smallest of things. As a child, I was more likely to be found on the forest floor studying the miniature worlds beneath rather than gazing at the grand vistas overhead. The jungles, the mountains, the animals... and Warli culture itself, inspired us to become artists."
In the process, they move Warli tradition forward, without diluting its essence.
