See all Women Weavers of Nagaland's Work
This pair of backstrap woven cushion covers is handwoven by the skilled women weavers of Nagaland, in northeast India. Each pattern is deeply rooted within Naga culture and symbolism, where traditional designs communicate tribal identity and social status, and are often emblematic of heroic triumphs.
Women from Nagaland are extraordinary weavers. The backstrap loom (also called the loin loom) has no mechanical parts. Its warp threads are stretched between two parallel bamboo rods, one end tied to a post, and the other, secured around the weaver’s lower back with a strap. The weaver is integral to the loom, as she controls the 'tension' with her own body. The simple structure belies the complex patterns created using a supplementary weft technique. The cloth is densely woven and has a charaterictic ribbed texture. The flexibility of the backstrap loom enables women to work in their own homes.
Today Naga women take pride in weaving, not only for their family, but for the world. It gives them a dependable livelihood, between farming seasons, and more importantly, an empowered voice in their homes and communities.
