Indigene

Indigene

Indigene was created in 2010, and since then the founders have been dedicated to nurturing their relationships with artisans. What makes them special is their ability to shine a spotlight on simple, modest designs that maintain the essence of “made by hand”.

Simplicity outlives complexity. Removing excess embellishments and focusing on the true essence of something, brings out its timelessness. This is exactly what Ruchi Tripathi and Jaya Bhatt, textile graduates from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi and founders of Indigene, have been able to achieve. By connecting artisan to artist, artist to the designer, and designer to producers, Indigene has created a line of production that supports all the elements of handcrafted textiles. In doing so, they have facilitated the revival of khadi through their modern and relevant designs.

Passion for the handcrafted: this fundamental idea is what compelled Ruchi and Jaya to start their initiative, and they have been able to continuously support artisans who work with khadi, cotton, silk, ajrakh, hand embroidery, and resist han- printing techniques from Rajasthan. Using just these few techniques, they continuously come up with new and relevant collections, proving that simplicity truly never runs out of style. Their decision to dedicate themselves to developing these few techniques has also enabled Indigene to become a reliable face for the artisans. If it wasn’t for the consistent patronage of companies like Indigene, these artisans could potentially turn away from the handicraft business and relinquish their techniques to earn their livings in a more conventional way.

Ever since they created Indigene, Jaya and Ruchi Indigene have been dedicated to nurturing their relationships with artisans. What makes them special is their ability to shine a spotlight on simple, modest designs that maintain the essence of “made by hand”. By not compromising on authenticity, their relationship with artisan communities has done nothing but strengthened, and they have now created a large family of highly skilled artisans. In doing so, the process of the hand-crafted good remains pure, but they add a fresh air to their collections with their contemporary cuts and carefully selected colour schemes.
