Ahmedabad Walls

A tactile exhibition of rare books and selected photographs

Robert Stephens   |   20 October 2018 - 20 September 2018 | 11 am to 7 pm

Ahmedabad Walls is a tactile exhibition featuring Patrick Geddes’ Notes on Ahmedabad (1915), coalesced with contemporary aerial photographs of Ahmedabad by Robert D. Stephens. Notes on Ahmedabad encapsulates Scottish Polymath Patrick Geddes’ town planning report for the city and specifically his defense of the five hundred-year-old City Walls.  Additional archival material on exhibit includes unpublished correspondence with the Government of Bombay and more than thirty rare books by (and about) Geddes from 1879 – 1972.

Robert Stephens is a Mumbai based architect and artist who has been documenting urban India from 10,000 feet above sea level since 2007. His first exhibition of 24 black and white photographs, Mumbai Articles (2014), launched at his representative gallery, ARTISANS’ in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai. Subsequent exhibitions include Madras Transit (2015) at Amethyst, Chennai, Mumbai North (2016) and Mumbai Shadows (2017).

Simultaneous to the creation of contemporary imagery, Robert is actively engaged in the acquisition and preservation of rare books and antiquarian maps related to cities of India.
